Sealants
Young children rarely do a good job of brushing their teeth on their own. Molars in particular are difficult to keep clean because of the natural grooves and shape of the teeth. Sealants are one tool in the prevention of cavities. A sealant is a plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and pre-molars). This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves of the chewing surfaces of the back teeth and acts as a barrier protecting enamel from plaque and acids. The sealant is painlessly applied and costs about 65% less than a regular filling. Sealants can last for many years. However, sealants (like teeth) can be damaged if a child chews ice or a lot of hard food. Sealants need to be checked at every six-month cleaning appointment and may require repairing or replacement. If your child eats something they shouldn't and the sealants pop off within a year of placement, we will replace it for free. And, after that first year, as long as your child comes for regular six-month check-ups, we will replace sealants at half-price. Just remember, sealants won't absolutely prevent cavities...your child still needs to brush and floss twice a day, receive proper nutrition and fluoride and have regular dental check-ups.
